Marks of a severe burn on both jaws and chin, blue scar outer corner of left eye, lost part of top of fore finger of right hand, scar inside left wrist. Simon Simcox, also a miner from Stafford was tried at the same time for highway robbery

Company testified...The prisoner about eight oclock on Saturday night last came to my hut and wanted to come in. When I would not let him in he went to the next hut and made a row. I went to him for the purpose of putting him in his barracks when he struck me several times. I went to report it to Mr. Steele, when he followed me along the road and struck me again..Guilty of assaulting his overseer. Sentenced to 50 lashes
